How to judge the service life of the power adapter

  The life span of a power adapter cannot be predicted for accurate years, so the life span of a general power supply is measured by the mean time between failures. So what key components do we need to pay attention to and determine their service life?

  1. Electrolytic capacitor

  The electrolytic capacitor is a temperature-sensitive device in the power adapter device. From this perspective, the quality of the electrolytic capacitor also determines the life of the power supply device to a certain extent, and the performance of AC-DC power adapter products is outstanding.

  2. Primary switch tube (MOS tube)

  This type of switching device is in a high-speed switching state, and the voltage stress and current stress are high. The heat caused by the switching loss will also accelerate the aging of the device, and it is also susceptible to breakdown and damage due to external high voltage interference.

  3. High frequency power transformer

  During the energy transmission of high frequency transformer, internal loss will cause it to generate heat, and the heat emitted will also affect the life of the transformer material. Common transformer faults include insulation breakdown, winding burnout, and copper wire breakage.

  4. Multilayer ceramic capacitors

  SMD ceramic capacitors are prone to problems in the solder joints of the capacitors, which may crack due to some stress. In order to minimize the possibility of occurrence, it is recommended to avoid the parallel use of multiple ceramic capacitors.

  5. Output rectifier diode

  Diodes are mainly subjected to two major electrical stresses, including reverse withstand voltage and forward current. At the same time, diodes are also heating devices. In order to ensure the service life of this device, we will flow out enough margin during the design, and ultimately ensure the batch performance of the power adapter.

  6. Photocoupler

  The current transfer ratio (CTR) will gradually decrease over time. In order to keep the loop stable, the current of the light-emitting diode will continue to increase and eventually reach its limit value, resulting in damage to the optocoupler.

  In summary, the value of the power adapter module is not with the module itself, but with the level of craftsmanship that guarantees batch quality. What consumers need is the safety and reliability of the power adapter, thereby reducing product production and maintenance costs.

  Several situations to avoid before installing the capacitor

  Capacitors are already one of the indispensable electronic components in our lives. When installing capacitors, we should avoid using them in the following situations. It is well known that the quality of capacitors is also affected by temperature. So what are the situations that we need to pay attention to, engineers and novices should take a look.

  1. High temperature (the temperature exceeds the maximum use temperature).

  2. Used in circuits that are repeatedly charged and discharged rapidly, such as rapid charging applications, their service life may be reduced due to a decrease in capacity and a sharp rise in temperature.

  3. Apply reverse voltage or AC voltage, when the capacitor is connected to the circuit with the reverse polarity, the capacitor will cause the electronic circuit to short-circuit, and the resulting current will cause the capacitor to be damaged.

  4. Overcurrent (the current exceeds the rated ripple current). After the applied ripple current exceeds the rated value, it will cause the capacitor body to overheat, reduce the capacity and shorten the life.

  5. Overvoltage (the voltage exceeds the rated voltage). When the voltage applied to the capacitor is higher than the rated working voltage, the leakage current of the capacitor will increase, and its electrical and oxygen properties will deteriorate in a short time until it is damaged.

  6. When installing the capacitor, leave a space above the capacitor explosion-proof valve, avoid wiring and other components above the explosion valve, and avoid installing heating components around the capacitor and the circuit board.

  The six points mentioned in this article are exactly a problem that we should pay attention to before installing capacitors. Try to avoid using capacitors in this case. Protecting capacitors is also one of our jobs, damage and breakdown will also affect other electronic components, so it is very important to pay attention and avoid it at all times.
