  From charging tablets or smartphone batteries to powering laptops or home routers, power adapters have long been a necessary part of people’s daily lives. For consumer electronics original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) who pair power adapters with their products, there are two key driving factors that need to be addressed, that is, to ensure that they provide high energy efficiency levels and meet safety regulations, and they also need to provide compact form factors. In recent years, due to the combination of government regulations and energy efficiency projects such as the US "Energy Star", the European Union’s Eco-Design Directive and the China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS), the industry has paid great attention to reducing the overall power of the adapter by reducing the power used in standby mode. Energy consumption level. This article will discuss emerging technology trends that drive the latest requirements, including processes that require a reduction in the number of external components used and make designs more stylish and thinner.

  Standby energy consumption is sometimes referred to as "vampire energy consumption" or "dummy load", which refers to the electrical energy consumed by electronic devices and appliances when they are switched off but still plugged into a power outlet. Taking the United States as an example, standby energy consumption accounts for about 10% of the average total energy consumption of American households. This is equivalent to a staggering 129 TWh (that is, 129 billion kWh) of electricity, or 36 units of 400 MW to generate electricity. The electricity output from the plant causes 75 million tons of carbon dioxide to be emitted every year.

  In the United States, the current federal standards that took effect on July 1, 2008 require power supplies with a power of less than 250 W to consume less than 500 mW at no-load. Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has proposed more stringent battery chargers and electronic products. The power efficiency standard will take effect on July 1, 2013. According to the new standard, the maximum no-load energy consumption of an AC-DC (AC-DC) external power supply with a nameplate output power between 49 to 250 W (typical notebook video device power is in this range) must be less than 0.210 W. However, These national standards usually lag behind other standards and market requirements. The U.S. Energy Policy and Energy Conservation Act (EPCA) of 1975 stipulates that: any new energy-saving standards must be formulated to provide the greatest degree of energy efficiency improvement, not only technically feasible, but also economically reasonable. Therefore, these national standards usually do not represent "first-class" performance. Many power supply manufacturers require that no-load energy consumption be limited to as low as possible, thus distinguishing their products from competing products.

  The most aggressive government agency in energy efficiency standards is probably California. Power supply manufacturers do not want to provide specific models of products only for California. Therefore, the actual scope of the California standard is much wider. For example, the new electrical energy efficiency regulations issued by California in January 2012 put battery charger systems as an important focus. California has more than 170 million chargers used for charging every year. According to speculation, improving energy efficiency in this particular area will save 2,200 gigawatt-hours (2.2 billion kilowatt-hours) of electricity each year. These circuits are enough to power 350,000 homes, which is equivalent to saving $306 million in residential/commercial electricity bills each year. These energy efficiency regulations implemented by the California Energy Commission (CEC) require that all consumer chargers used in mobile phones, personal care equipment and power tools must be complied with by February 2013, and industrial chargers must be within the next 12 months Comply. Several other states in the United States hope to follow California's example of reducing standby energy consumption limits.
